§ Mr. Georgeasked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what evidence he has that the practice of sending out solicitations which look like invoices, and are contrary to the provisions of the Unsolicited Goods and Services (Amendment) Act 1975, is continuing.
§ Mr. John FraserThe only evidence that this practice is continuing is in respect of documents sent from overseas relating to directory entries. If such documents contravene United Kingdom legislation, action can be taken only if the person concerned comes within the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom courts within six months of committing the offence. Nevertheless, in such cases the matter may be taken up informally with the appropriate authorities in the country concerned.
If my hon. Friend has any evidence of breaches of the Act by United Kingdom companies he should bring it to the attention of the police. In the case of overseas companies it would be helpful if any evidence could be sent to my Department.
