HC Deb 25 April 1977 vol 930 cc216-7W
Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how much revenue he estimates is likely to be lost during the year 1977 due to non-payment of vehicle licence fees.

Mr. Horam

I have in hand at the moment a special survey designed to provide precisely this information.

Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Transport, how many, and what proportion, of vehicle owners found not to have paid their licence fees were not prosecuted during the years 1975 and 1976; how many, and what proportion, were merely permitted to pay the appropriate licence fee; how many, and what proportion, were charged additional

1975 1976 (estimated)
Total unlicensed but not prosecuted 445,000 435,000
(74%) (73%)
Including
(a) back duty only paid 180,000 160,000
(31%) (27%)
(b) back duty plus "additional sum" paid 162,000 130,000
(27%) (23%)
Figures for the total value of "additional sum" penalties paid in those years are not readily available.

Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what additional steps he intends to take to track down unlicensed vehicles on the roads.

Mr. Horam

I would refer my hon. and learned Friend to the reply I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Newham, North-West (Mr. Lewis) on 4th April.—[Vol. 929, c. 316–17.]
