HC Deb 25 April 1977 vol 930 c216W
Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many vehicle owners have been prosecuted because their vehicles were unlicensed during each of the past five years for which records are available; how many and what percentage of such owners were convicted and acquitted, respectively; and what penalties were imposed on those who were convicted.

Mr. Horam

The information requested is as follows:

Year Prosecutions Total Value of Penalties
£
1972 160,321 1,388,826
1973 156,162 1,596,746
1974 142,905 1,747,350
1975 156,286 2,460,574
1976 165,000 2,800,000
(estimated) (estimated)

The precise proportion of acquittals is—I regret—not available, but it is certainly not more than 5 per cent.
