HC Deb 19 April 1977 vol 930 c4W
Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many police cadets there were in Scotland at the latest date; how many there were in 1974; and how many there were in 1964;

(2) how many traffic wardens there were in Scotland at the latest available date; and how many there were in 1974;

(3) if he will list all the civilian aids currently available to the police force whose work enables policemen and policewomen to be released from crime duties; what were the aids available similarly in 1974; and what proposals there are to cut those aids further.

Mr. Harry Ewing

The number of cadets at 31st March in each of the years was:

1964 258
1974 478
1977 439
The number of traffic wardens at 31st March in each year mentioned by the hon. Member was:
1974 760
1977 784
Apart from cadets, traffic wardens, and civilians employed on domestic duties the numbers of civilians at 31st March in each year on the authorised establishment of police forces in Scotland i.e. those engaged on clerical and technical duties, was:
Clerical Technical Total
1974 1,121 732 1,853
1977 1,250 876 2,126
I do not know whether the last category corresponds with what the hon. Member has in mind in his reference to releasing police officers from crime duties. I have no proposals at present to cut these numbers.
