§ Mr. Hugh Jenkinsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many living animals were used in experiments, tests and research in 1975; how many were killed; and how many persons were engaged on this work.
§ Dr. SummerskillIn 1975, 5,379,084 experiments were performed under the authority of the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 by 11,460 licensees. The number of animals would be smaller than the number of experiments. Information about the number of animals killed is not at present available, but it is hoped that the review we are conducting of our annual return should in due course make it possible to give figures of this kind.
922Whome system becomes available. There are 11 purpose-built remand centres for those aged 17–20 remanded in custody and it is Government policy to phase out the use of local prisons for this purpose as more remand centres become available. A remand centre at Norwich was opened in 1976, two more remand centres are being built and another one is being extended.
