Mr. MacGregor

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what has been the total number of domestic ratepayers over the past three years in the District Councils of South Norfolk and Breckland; and, of these, how many have receive rate rebates in each of those years concerned.

Mr. Guy Barnett

The number of rate rebates granted in 1974–75 and 1975–76 in the Breckland and South Norfolk Districts is shown below.

Breckland South Norfolk
Number granted April-September 1974 3,773 3,009
Number granted October 1974-March 1975. 3,708 3,036
Number of persons receiving rate rebate at 31st March 1976. 4,822 3,603

In 1973–74 the previous rebate scheme was administered by the pre-reorganisation authorities and not all details are available. I have no precise information on the number of domestic ratepayers in the districts concerned, but in April 1975 there were 31,209 domestic hereditaments in Breckland and 31,941 in South Norfolk.
