HC Deb 02 November 1976 vol 918 cc525-6W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the full list of matters which prisoners are allowed to mention in (a) correspondence and (b) notebooks taken out of prison at the end of a sentence; and what are the reasons for these prohibitions.

Mr. John

Prisoners' correspondence and the use which may be made of notebooks are regulated by Prison Rules and Standing Orders, copies of which are in the Library of the House. Prisoners may mention any matter that is not prohibited by these. Such restrictions as are imposed are for the purposes of safeguarding order, discipline, personal privacy, the procedures for dealing with complaints and the prevention of criminal activity.
