HC Deb 04 March 1976 vol 906 cc676-7W
Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners are currently serving 30 year terms of imprisonment or more.

Dr. Summerskill

On 2nd February 1976 there were four prisoners who had been sentenced to determinate sentences of imprisonment of 30 years or more, and 1,190 prisoners who had been sentenced to life imprisonment or ordered to be detained during Her Majesty's Pleasure.

Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of prisoners who have died of starvation in United Kingdom prisons during the past 10 years.

Dr. Summerskill

In prisons in England and Wales two prisoners have died following deliberate refusal of food.

Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his policy for the movement of Category A prisoners between prisons.

Dr. Summerskill

Category A prisoners are treated no differently from others as far as decision about transfer between prisons is concerned, except to the extent that accommodation appropriate for such prisoners is limited. Apart from security considerations, factors that might affect a prisoner's location are his work and educational experience, his domestic and personal circumstances and his medical and training needs.
