Mr. Gow

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what is his latest estimate of the cost of the salaries of the 29 special advisers to Ministers during the current financial year; and what was the actual cost of the salaries of special advisers to Ministers in each of the years since such appointments were first made.

Mr. Charles R. Morris,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 1st March 1976; Vol. 906, c. 421], gave the following information

The latest estimate of cost of the salaries of special advisers to Ministers during the current financial year is £196,000. This figure includes salary costs of a little over £11,000 in respect of advisers who have left during the period.

The actual cost of the salaries of special advisers, during the present administration, since appointments were first made in February 1974 is given below:
