HC Deb 25 June 1976 vol 913 c474W
Mr. George

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much revenue was forgone in allowing child tax allowances; if he will divide this sum according to the amount lost to standard rate tax-payers and those claiming the higher rates; and for how many children tax allowances were drawn.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

The estimated total revenue forgone for 1976–77 from child tax allowance is £1,510 million, of which nearly £1,300 million relates to basic rate taxpayers and just over £200 million to higher rate taxpayers. The estimated number of child tax allowances for 1976–77 is 14.2 million.
