asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why, in view of the success of the Government's and TUC's wages and incomes policy, it is not to continue beyond 1977.

It is too early to reach any firm conclusions about pay policy for the period beyond July 1977, but, as leading trade unionists have also recognised, it is vital that we avoid the kind of wages explosion that followed the collapse of the last Government's pay policy.
