HL Deb 13 July 1976 vol 373 c302WA
Lord GRIDLEY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many secretaries and typists are employed directly or indirectly, in:

  1. (i) Central Government Departments;
  2. (ii) Nationalised and Public Corporations;
  3. (iii) Local Authorities.

Lord SHEPHERD

I can answer only for the staff employed in Central Government Departments. At 1st April 1976 there were 30,010 directly employed secretaries and typists in post; and in London, there were 292 indirectly employed staff in post. Figures are not available centrally for the number of indirectly employed staff outside London, and they could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.
