HC Deb 26 January 1976 vol 904 cc38-9W
Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services by what means publications submitted to the DHSS are vetted for accuracy.

Mrs. Castle

The Department vets for accuracy proposed publications submitted by organisations and persons outside the Civil Service provided no unacceptable burden is imposed upon official resources. The manuscripts are read by officials dealing with the subjects covered who, when replying, normally add any comments which may be helpful.

Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what rules govern the reading of manuscripts which are critical of the DHSS by officials of the Department.

Mrs. Castle

There are no special rules governing the reading by officials of manuscripts critical of the Department. Any request made to the Department for official comment is dealt with under the normal procedure relating to the scrutiny of proposed publications submitted by organisations or persons outside the Civil Service.
