Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many men and women over 21 years of age were unemployed in the Brighton Borough Council area on 31st January 1976; and what were the figures in 1974, 1973, 1972, 1971, 1970, and 1969.

Mr. John Fraser

The numbers unemployed are normally analysed by age ranges in January and July each year. Information was not collected in January 1974, however, because of an energy crisis. The following table shows the numbers unemployed aged 20 and over in the Brighton employment office area in July 1974 and in January of each other year specified. The analysis does not identify those aged 21 and over.

Men Women Total
January 1969 2,491 375 2,866
January 1970 2,711 319 3,030
January 1971 2,649 356 3,005
January 1972 3,510 439 3,949

July 1974 2,066 227 2,293
