Mr. Geoffrey Johnson Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the numbers of employed in the area covered by the employment offices which corresponds closely to the constituency of East Grinstead for the years: 1966–67, 1967–68, 1968–69, 1969–70, 1970–71, 1971–72, 1972–73, 1973–74 and 1974–75; and how many are now unemployed for more than 26 weeks.

Mr. John Fraser

The numbers unemployed are normally analysed by age ranges in January and July each year. Information was not collected in January 1974, however, because of an energy crisis. The following table shows the numbers of employees in employment in the East Grinstead area at June in each year from 1966 to 1973, the latest date for which estimates of the total numbers employed in local areas are available. Separate employment estimates for Crowborough and Uckfield are not available throughout the period specified.

Estimates for June 1971(b) and later dates are taken from censuses of employment and are not strictly comparable with figures for June 1971(a) and earlier dates, which are based on counts of national insurance cards.

At January 1976, 132 unemployed people had been registered for more than 26 weeks in the area covered by the East Grinstead and Uckfield employment offices. This figure does not include adult students. Separate figures are not available for Crowborough; these are included with the Tunbridge Wells employment office figures.
