HC Deb 05 February 1976 vol 904 c703W
22. Mr. George Rodgers

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will take steps to amend the law in order to ensure that persons in receipt of mobility allowance do not lose the benefits of Section 7 of the Finance Act 1971.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

No. Our general policy is that people in receipt of the mobility allowance should not receive exemption from vehicle excise duty as well.

37. Mr. Hannam

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will introduce legislation to exempt from vehicle excise duty recipients of the mobility allowance.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

No. The mobility allowance is designed to allocate available resources on the basis of disability, and not to give preference to those who have cars. To add this further benefit would detract from this principle.
