asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what progress is being made towards starting an experiment in the tape recording of police interviews.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The committee which I have established to look into the feasibility of an experiment in the tape recording of police interrogations is making good progress. In the light of the committee's report I will decide whether an experiment should be mounted.
