HC Deb 04 February 1976 vol 904 cc662-3W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many modernised homes for prison staff have now been completed at Highpoint Prison, Stradishall, Suffolk; and how many already have been occupied.

Dr. Summerskill

22 of the former Ministry of Defence houses at Highpoint Prison which are being modernised for prison staff are complete and nine of them are occupied.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many homes for prison staff he expects to complete at Highpoint Prison in the next six months, 12 months and two years, respectively.

Dr. Summerskill

Of the 104 houses for prison staff being provided at High-point Prison 56 will be completed within the next six months, and a further 27 in the next 12 months. The remaining 21 will be completed after April 1978.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the provision of staff homes at Highpoint Prison, he still expects to acquire or to build large numbers of houses for prison officers in Haverhill; if so, how many, approximately, will be needed in that town in each of the years, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980; and who will pay for them.

Dr. Summerskill

The 104 houses being provided at Highpoint Prison will meet only part of the total eventual requirement for prison staff for both Highpoint Prison and Northridge Detention Centre. The further 223 houses required will be built on a site in Haverhill already in Home Office ownership. The building of the houses will be phased with the progress in developing the prison and detention centre and the first 49 are expected to be complete early in 1978. The plan is to complete the remainder from 1980 onwards as required. They will be paid for from Home Office funds.
