HC Deb 21 December 1976 vol 923 cc129-30W
Mr. Kenneth Clarke

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what relief against CAP import levies has been given to imports of Botswana beef into the EEC in each year since the accession of the United Kingdom to the EEC; and what relief will be given in future.

Mr. Bishop

Since July 1975 levies on beef from Botswana and three other African countries have been reduced by 90 per cent. in order to facilitate access to the Community market for the quantities which the EEC, through the Lome Convention, has undertaken to import each year from the countries concerned. The Council of Ministers has recently agreed that the present arrangements should be extended until 31st December 1977.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what percentage of the total consumption of beef by the United Kingdom and by the EEC as a whole have imports of beef from Botswana represented in each year since the accession of the United Kingdom to the EEC.

Mr. Bishop

The relationship between United Kingdom imports of beef from Botswana and total United Kingdom supplies of beef made available for consumption in each year since our accession to the EEC has been:

Per cent.
1973 1.5
1974 0.3
1975 0.8
1976 (Jan.—June) 1.6

Total EEC imports of beef from Botswana form a negligible percentage of Community consumption: less than one-half of 1 per cent. in each of the years in question.
