§ Mr. Clemitsonasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list, according to the latest available statistics, how many people have: (a) applied for mobility allowance since the initiation of the scheme, (b) been granted mobility allowance without recourse to the appeals procedure, (c) been refused on first application but have been granted an allowance on appeal and (d) have appealed unsuccessfully against a refusal to grant the allowance.
§ Mr. Alfred MorrisSince the commencement of the mobility allowance scheme, about 49,000 "in-phase" claims 501W have been received, that is, claims from people who fall within the currently eligible age range. Just over 33,000 awards have been made, including 440 awards after appeal. There have been 1,139 unsuccessful appeals, and included among about 6,500 claims not yet decided there are 418 in which the claimant has appealed against an unfavourable decision and is awaiting the outcome of his appeal.
