Mr. Wigley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will publish the gross savings collected by the national saving movement for Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England, respectively, for the year 1975–76;

(2) if he will publish a table showing the number of members of national savings groups in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England at the most recent convenient date.

The gross savings collected directly by groups in the national savings movement and the numbers of group members were as follows:

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated annual cost of Civil Service staff support for the National Savings movement (a) for the United Kingdom in total and (b) for Wales for the last financial year.

The estimated costs of Civil Service staff support for the voluntary savings movement in the financial year 1975–76 were as follows:

United Kingdom £2,811,000
Wales £150,000

These figures include salaries and general administrative expenses but exclude superannuation and other overhead expenses. The separate figures for Wales do not include any apportioned costs of the Headquarters of the National Savings Committee for England and Wales.
