HC Deb 09 December 1976 vol 922 cc360-1W
Mr. Neubert

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the purchasing power of the average pensioner couple in February 1974, on 30th October 1976 and on 16th November 1976 based on the internal purchasing power of the £ sterling at 100p in February 1974, 62p on 30th October 1976 and on 16th November 1976.

Mr. Denzil Davies

The retirement pension for a married couple was £12.50p in February 1974, £21.20p on 30th October 1976 and £24.50p on 16th November 1976. If the internal purchasing power of the pound were taken as 100p in February 1974 and its value on both 30th October and 16th November 1976 as 62p then the relative purchasing power of these pensions by comparison to February 1974 would be £12.50, £13.15 and £15.20 respectively.
