HC Deb 06 August 1976 vol 916 cc1079-80W
Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many civil servants of the administrative grades are employed in his Department; and what is the percentage educated in: (a) comprehensive schools, (b) grammar schools, (c) direct grant schools and (d) public schools.

Mr. Hattersley

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office employs members of both Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service and the Home Civil Service. At present, there are 944 officers in the administrative stream of the Diplomatic Service and 2,521 officers in the executive stream, which together equate to the Administration Group of the Home Civil Service. In addition, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, including the Passport Office, employes 1,483 members of the Administration Group of the Home Civil Service.

Information on the education of these officers is not readily available and could not be obtained without disproportionate cost.
