Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether the Council on Tribunals has given its approval to the present method of compilation of the panel of inspectors for highway inquiries.

Dr. Gilbert

Appointments to the Department's panel of fee-paid inspectors are subject to the approval of the Lord Chancellor. The range of inquiry work on which these inspectors should be employed has been approved by the Council on Tribunals; it includes inquiries into motorway and trunk road proposals.

Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what representations he has received regarding the new rules on highway inquiry procedures.
