HC Deb 04 August 1976 vol 916 cc780-1W
Mr. Luce

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is satisfied that Belgium has not exceeded its quota of demersal fish off the South Coast; and whether he plans to improve the enforcement procedures.

Mr. Bishop

According to quota returns made to the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission the Belgian quota for sole in the English Channel of 150 tons has already been taken, but some 38 tons of the plaice quota remain. It is the responsibility of the Belgian Government to see that these quotas are properly enforced, but the United Kingdom Government watch the situation, and representations have recently been made to the Belgian authorities asking them to investigate the situation thoroughly. One of our objectives in the discussions on the common fisheries policy will be to ensure that effective conservation measures are operated within the Community.
