HC Deb 03 August 1976 vol 916 cc683-4W
Mr. David Price

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many 5p and 10p coins, respectively, are currently in circulation; and what steps he has taken to ensure that the proportionate issue of the two coins meets the demands of the retail trade and of the general public.

Mr. Denzil Davies

The numbers of 5p and 10p coins estimated to be in circulation on 30th June 1976 were approximately 1,500 million and 1,750 million, respectively.

The Royal Mint makes weekly issues to the clearing banks in the quantities and denominations they need to meet the demands of their customers. A recent survey commissioned from independent consultants indicated that the mix of coins then in circulation was well suited to the public generally.
