HC Deb 14 April 1976 vol 909 c563W
Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what qualities and qualifications are required by his Department in appointing people to the list of inspectors to serve at public inquiries &c.; and whether they are recruited solely from within his department.

Mr. John Silkin

I am sending the hon. Member copies of recent advertisements for recruitment to the salaried Inspectorate. Similar qualities and qualifications are required in the case of the Department's panel of fee paid inspectors and all appointments are made with the approval of the Lord Chancellor. Few inspectors are recruited from within the Department.

Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many people are on the list of Department of the Environment Inspectors; and how many are women.

Mr. John Silkin

My Department employs 213 salaried inspectors. In addition, there are 47 fee paid inspectors available to hold local inquiries on a regular basis on behalf of the Secretary of State. Seven salaried inspectors are women.
