Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many sheep have been killed or mutilated by dogs during the last 12 months in the Midlands and the North West; and if he will make a statement on what action is being taken to reduce this slaughter.

The latest available information covers the calendar year preceding local government reorgansation and is as follows:

Existing statutory provisions to protect livestock against dogs will be reviewed in the light of the forthcoming Report of the Inter-Departmental Working Party on Dogs.
