HC Deb 08 April 1976 vol 909 cc323-4W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many persons are at present in receipt of (a) rent rebate, (b) a rent allowance and (c) a rate rebate; how many of these persons are retirement pensioners; what is the average amount paid for each of these benefits; and what proportion of those eligible it is estimated that these numbers represent.

Mr. Alec Jones

The information in respect of rent rebates and allowances is as follows:

Average amount of rebate or allowance (per week)
£
Numbers of persons receiving rent rebate 52,800 2.72
Numbers of persons receiving a rent allowance 6,100 2.25

The above figures, which are estimates, relate to January 1976. The rent rebate figures include local authority and new town tenants.

The information on rate rebates is not available in the precise form asked for.

However, in the financial year 1974–75, the latest period for which data are available, it is estimated that 180,000 rate rebates were made, at a total cost of about £2.1 million.

The other information requested is not available.
