HC Deb 13 October 1975 vol 897 c637W
Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many civil servants in his Department not involved with Overseas Development matters are paid more than the various Ministers within it.

Mr. Ennals

Fifteen staff at home and abroad, including some ambassadors and high commissioners, are paid more than the Secretary of State. A further 37 staff are paid more than Ministers of State, and 147 are in grades paid more than Parliamentary Under-Secretaries.

The salary paid to Parliamentary Under-Secretaries falls within the pay scales of a further 365 staff, but it is not possible without disproportionate cost to ascertain how many of these staff are being paid more than Parliamentary Under-Secretaries.
