§ Mr. StrangThe measures to prevent the introducing of rabies into Great Britain, and to control outbreaks should they occur, are set out in the Rabies (Importation of Dogs, Cats and Other Mammals) Order 1974 and the Rabies (Control) Order 1974, both of which came into operation on 5th February 1975. The action taken to implement these measures varies from place to place to suit local circumstances.
Her Majestys Customs are our first line of defence in preventing the importation of the disease by means of illegally imported animals; and the duties of diseases of animals inspectors, employed by local authorities, include the enforcement of the regulations.
