HC Deb 10 November 1975 vol 899 c406W
Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will take steps either to end the present temporary speed restrictions or to render them comprehensible to motorists by the erection of appropriate speed limit signs.

Dr. Gilbert

I hope to make a statement very soon.

Mr. Moate

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he can yet make a statement on the effect of imposing additional speed limits on roads in Great Britain for the purposes of energy conservation; what representations he has received about possible confusion caused to motorists; and if it is his intention to continue the present restrictions.

Dr. Gilbert

I hope to make a statement very soon.

Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether his order imposing a 50 m.p.h. speed limit on certain roads is intended to inhibit the imposition of lower limits in cases where the relevant authority so desires.

Dr. Gilbert

No; but the replacement of the previous 70 m.p.h. limit by the general 50 m.p.h. limit could have had a bearing on the case for restricting a particular length of road to 40 m.p.h.
