§ Mr. Kelleyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the number of civil servants and local government officers per 100,000 inhabitants of the various member States of the EEC.
§ Mr. Hattersley, pursuant to the reply [Official Report, 18th June 1975; Vol. 893, c. 462], gave the following information:
Pursuant to my right hon. Friend the Minister of State's reply the following are the numbers:
Belgium … … 2,500 Denmark … … 1,600 France … … 3,600 Germany … … 4,100 Ireland … … 2,500 Italy … … 1,250 Luxembourg … … 570 Netherlands … … 2,200 United Kingdom … … 2,900 These figures are necessarily an approximation because of the lack of a definition of what precisely constitutes a civil servant in different EEC countries. The figures exclude the armed forces, teachers, police and employees of State enterprises where these groups are readily identifiable.
