HC Deb 27 February 1975 vol 887 cc211-2W
Mrs. Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on Lord Justice Scarman's report on the Red Lion Square disorders of 15th June 1974.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The report was published today.

I am most grateful to Lord Justice Scarman for the time and care he has devoted to this report. It is invaluable for its lucid analysis both of the events in Red Lion Square and of the general issues of principle and practice involved in the right to demonstrate. It deserves the closest study by the police and by those who organise or take part in demonstrations.

I shall consider the recommendations carefully, in consultation with the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis and other chief officers of police.
