HC Deb 15 December 1975 vol 902 c499W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, in view of the need for local education authorities and head teachers to make preparations to deal with the proposed change in the date for leaving school, he will make haste to bring forward the necessary legislation and in the meantime offer guidance on how he expects the new arrangements to work.

Miss Joan Lestor

A Bill to bring forward the summer school leaving date to the Friday before the last Monday in May was introduced in another place on 11th December. If enacted by Parliament its effect will be that pupils who attain their sixteenth birthday between the beginning of February and the end of August will be able to leave school on the new May leaving date. My right hon. Friend intends to issue a circular of guidance to local education authorities and schools at the earliest appropriate date.
