§ Dr. Hampsonasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many degree and DipHE courses were put forward by colleges, further education centres and institutes of higher education in 1974; how many were approved by officials of his Department; and how many were rejected by the CNAA and validating universities;
(2) how many degrees and DipHEs have so far this year been approved by officials of his Department; how many 499W have been rejected; and how many there are still unprocessed.
§ Mr. MulleyThe validation of courses is not a matter for me but for the academic validating bodies, and I do not have details of the decisions they reach. I do have a role in ensuring that proposed degree and DipHE courses in non-niversity institutions are consonant with the future role of the institution concerned, are likely to be economically viable and do not unnecessarily duplicate provision in other institutions. Under these criteria, of applications received in 1974 for 375 degree courses and 16 DipHE courses, 287 and 10 respectively were approved. So far this year, 318 degree and 67 DipHE courses have been approved and 126 degree and 32 DipHE courses have been refused approval.
