HC Deb 28 November 1974 vol 882 cc234-5W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish a table showing the number of unemployed insured persons in Great Britain as a whole for each year from 1964 onwards, together with the percentage of the total for each year who were registered as unemployed in Scotland, Wales and the regions of England, respectively.

Mr. John Fraser

Following is the information for October each year:

Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the ratios of unemployed to job vacancies for men and women, respectively, for Wales, South-East England, East Midlands and West Midlands, in the most recent convenient month.

Mr. John Fraser

The following table shows the available information. The vacancy statistics on which the ratios are based relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and are not a measure of total vacancies.

Vacancies notified to Employment Offices as percentage of total unemployed October 1974
Males Females
Wales 18.7 49.9
South-East 83.9 305.6
East Midlands 39.3 141.1
West Midlands* 34.8 72.1
* For the West Midlands, detailed information for October 1974 is not available because of industrial action and the figures quoted are for September 1974.

The statistics do not include figures from careers offices.
