§ 31. Mr. Teddy Taylorasked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the average cost per them of domestic gas in Scotland in the most recent annual period for which figures are available; and by what percentage this exceeded or was less than the average price for domestic gas in England and Wales.
§ Mr. John SmithThe figures for 1973–74 were 13.78p and 27 per cent. reflecting differences in average consumption as well as in tariffs. The excess is mainly attributable to the lower average consumption in Scotland and higher distribution costs arising from low population density and geography. Natural gas from the Southern Basin gas fields of the North Sea has always been delivered to Scottish Gas at the same price as to all regions in England and Wales.
§ Mr. John SmithAs my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer has already indicated, domestic gas prices are likely to rise in the new year.
