HC Deb 25 November 1974 vol 882 cc48-9W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the average earnings of male manual workers in each English and Scottish region in 1973; and if he will show the figures for non-manual workers.

Mr. Booth

The following estimates of average gross weekly earnings are taken from the New Earnings Survey. They relate to April 1973 and to full-time men aged 21 and over whose pay for the survey reference period was not affected by absence:

Manual Men £ Non-Manual Men £
South East 39.30 51.80
East Anglia 35.50 44.40
South West 35.80 4510
West Midlands 40.30 46.40
East Midlands 36.90 44.30
Yorkshire and Humberside 36.90 44.80
North West 37.60 46.20
North 37.90 45.30
Glasgow 39.20 47.40
Falkirk/Stirling 38.00 48.00
Edinburgh 36.20 46.40
Tayside 32.70 45.40
Borders 32.10
South West 34.30
North East 35.60 46.40
Highlands 34.70

These estimates are subject to sampling error and are given to the nearest l0p.

Figures for the average earnings of non-manual men are not given for three of the regions of Scotland because the numbers in the sample in these regions were too small to provide reliable estimates.
