asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the maximum length of a load allowed to be carried on a lorry; and how much overhang is allowed under the existing regulations.

Generally 90 feet for the load, with no specific limit for overhang. The detailed provisions are contained in Regulations 130 and 131 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1973.
