asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he is aware of the shortage of service stations and associated facilities on the M6 motorway between the M6 and London by reason of the increased volume of traffic; and what steps he is taking to alleviate the congestion currently caused thereby.

Yes. Two new service areas are under construction; one on the M6 at Sandbach between the Knutsford and Keele service areas, the other on the M1 at Rothersthorpe between Watford Gap and Newport Pagnell service areas. Extensions are planned at eight of the 14 existing service areas on the M6 and M1.
