HC Deb 07 November 1974 vol 880 c189W
31. Mr. Cartwright

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is satisfied that his recent negotiations over sugar supplies will guarantee a long-term future for the British cane sugar refining industry in its present form.

Mr. Strang

In the long term the nature of future arrangements for securing supplies for the British cane sugar refiners will depend upon whether Britain remains a member of the EEC. As things stand, supplies will be ensured through the arrangements which the Community is making with the developing Commonwealth countries under Protocol 22 of the Treaty of Accession.

The import subsidy measure negotiated last month is designed to secure supplies to consumers in the short term, and the cane refiners will obviously be participating the scheme.
