HC Deb 05 November 1974 vol 880 c125W
Sir George Young

asked the Minister for the Civil Service how many civil servants have been given notice as a result of Pakistan's withdrawal from the Commonwealth and the Pakistan Act 1973.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

In the light of the Act to which the hon. Member refers my Department took action to ensure that every civil servant was made aware of the consequences of Pakistan's withdrawal from the Commonwealth. This enabled any individual affected to apply to the Home Office by 1st September 1974 to be registered as a United Kingdom citizen if he or she did not wish to become an alien in this country and consequently ineligible under Civil Service nationality rules to remain a civil servant.

Three civil servants were refused registration; they were given notice; one has left the service, and action on the other two has been put into abeyance pending appeals against non-registration.
