§ Mr. Ralph Howellasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many local government staff became redundant as a result of local government reorganisation; and what was the cost to the local authorities of redundancy payments to those affected.
§ Mr. OakesRecent information indicates that rather fewer than 1,000 local government officers in England have lost their employment as a result of reorganisation. It is not possible to estimate the total cost of compensation for loss of employment because the officers' salaries and years of service, on which individual assessments depend, will vary widely and130W because compensation is also affected by whether or not further employment is secured or made available.
