HC Deb 05 November 1974 vol 880 c114W
Q10. Mr. Stanley

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government will collectively be recommending to the British people aceptance or rejection of the renegotiated terms of entry into the EEC.

The Prime Minister

The proposals which Her Majesty's Government will put before the House at the appropriate time, and then to the country, will depend on the result of renegotiation.

Q12. Mr. Hal Miller

asked the Prime Minister whether he intends to seek legislative authority to provide finance for the process of consulting the British people through the ballot box on the continuance of British membership of the EEC.

The Prime Minister

Should Her Majesty's Government decide that a referendum is the best way of fulfilling the pledge to the country that the people should take the final decision through the ballot box, the necessary expenditure would be authorised in any enabling Bill and the acompanying financial resolution.

Q14. Mr. Tim Renton

asked the Prime Minister whether he will make it his policy to give Parliament the opportunity of considering the form in which the British people are to be consulted on the retention of membership of the EEC.

The Prime Minister

If the Government decide to proced with a referendum, Parliament will have the opportunity to consider and debate the necessary enabling legislation.
