HC Deb 27 March 1974 vol 871 cc145-6W
Mr. Raison

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many secondary schools in the Greater London area as a whole, and the ILEA area, are providing part-time schooling; and how this compares with the figures for January 1974 and September 1973.

Mr. Prentice

The local education authorities have said that 118 secondary schools in Greater London, including 32 in Inner London, were providing part-time schooling in the week ending 22nd March 1974. Corresponding figures for January 1974 were 113 and 50 and for September 1973, 16 and 15.

Mr. Raison

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many vacancies for full-time secondary school teachers exist in the Greater London area and ILEA area; and how these figures compare with those for January 1974 and September 1973.

Mr. Prentice

My Department does not collect regular statistics on teacher vacancies. Current reports from local education authorities suggest that there are at present about 400 vacancies for full-time secondary school teachers in Greater London, including about 100 in the ILEA. The situation changes from day to day. Authorities may not use the same criteria in assessing the number of vacancies.
