HC Deb 26 June 1974 vol 875 cc463-4W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of the goods and services purchased or hired by the Government in the United Kingdom is purchased or hired in England, Scotland and Wales, respectively.

Mr. Joel Barnett

I regret that this information is not available centrally. The term "goods and services" has a special meaning in relation to public expenditure and national income. It includes wages and salaries, Forces' pay, rents, purchase of land and buildings, construction and purchase of vehicles, plant and materials. These items are not analysed according to country of expenditure within the United Kingdom, partly because of difficulties in classification and definition, and partly because of estimating difficulties.
