HL Deb 25 June 1974 vol 352 c1466WA
LORD MOLSON

asked Her Majesty's Government

Whether it is true that 79 trans-sexual operations for altering persons' sex have been performed since 1965 on the National Health Service; what is estimated to be the cost; what is the average period that a patient occupies a hospital bed; and whether they think this is a justifiable use of National Health Service resources.

LORD WELLS-PESTELL

Information about the number and cost of particular operations is not centrally available. When operations of the type referred to are judged to be necessary in the interests of a person's health and future wellbeing by the consultant concerned, the use of N.H.S. resources can be justified.

House adjourned at ten minutes past eleven o'clock.
