HC Deb 24 June 1974 vol 875 c326W
Sir Anthony Royle

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the Government's policy towards European political unity as a long-term aim.

Mr. James Callaghan

Her Majesty's Government favour the closer co-ordination of policy among the member States of the European Community in appropriate spheres. As far as "European Union" is concerned, work has only recently started on an attempt to define it. The Council of Ministers will shortly take a preliminary look at some of the questions which arise. We are taking part in the work of definition and analysis. When it has progressed further and there is a clearer idea of what "European Union" means, we shall be able to state our policy towards it.
