HC Deb 18 June 1974 vol 875 cc93-4W
Mr. Loyden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services why applications for advance rent are refused to young mothers who acquire accommodation.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

If my hon. Friend is referring to provision for rent in advance for people who are entitled to supplementary benefit, the situation is that the Supplementary Benefits Commission is required by paragraph 13 of Schedule 2 to the Supplementary Benefit Act 1966 to include in its assessment of requirements only the rent payable for one week. Nevertheless, I understand that the commission is prepared exceptionally to make a payment for additional rent in advance when suitable accommodation cannot otherwise be obtained. If my hon. Friend is concerned about the circumstances of a constituent and will send me the details, I shall be glad to have inquiries made.
